Yacht charter in Greece: a complete guide to planning your trip
Contents
Step 1: choose the region
Greece has six main cruising regions. The Ionian (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia) offers green islands, short passages and moderate winds. The Saronic Gulf, close to Athens, suits short trips and families. The Cyclades (Mykonos, Paros, Santorini) are the classic white-village islands, but windy in July and August. The Dodecanese (Kos, Rhodes, Patmos) combine history and quieter islands. The Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos) have pine forests and a marine park. Crete offers a long, varied coastline. See yacht charter destinations in Greece.

Step 2: choose the type of charter
Bareboat: you sail the yacht yourself, with a recognised licence. Skippered: a professional skipper sails the yacht and you relax or learn. Crewed: captain plus host or chef, the most relaxed option. Cabin charter: book one cabin on a shared yacht. Day cruises, especially in Mykonos and Santorini, are always skippered. See bareboat, skippered, crewed and cabin charters.
Step 3: choose the yacht
Monohull sailing yachts give the classic sailing experience. Catamarans offer more space and stability, ideal for families and groups. Motor yachts cover more distance in less time, with fuel as the main extra cost. The number of guests, cabins and the level of comfort you want will narrow the choice.
When to go
The sailing season in Greece runs from about April to October. May, June and September offer warm water, fewer crowds and generally lighter winds. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, and the meltemi blows strongly in the Aegean. October is quieter, with warm sea but shorter days and more changeable weather.
How booking works
Booking a yacht charter in Greece with Astra Yachting follows the same steps every time. You send your preferred dates, the number of guests, the type of charter you want (bareboat, skippered or crewed) and any must-see stops. We check live availability with the yacht owners and charter fleets we work with, and come back with the yachts that are actually free for your dates, their exact specifications and a written quotation.
Once you choose a yacht, you receive the charter agreement and the payment schedule. The booking is confirmed when the agreement is signed and the first payment is received, as set out in our Booking Terms & Conditions. Before departure we collect the crew list required by the Greek port authorities, any sailing licences for bareboat charters, and your provisioning or transfer requests.
On embarkation day you meet the yacht in the marina for your chosen region, go through the check-in and safety briefing, and set off. During the charter you can reach us by phone or WhatsApp on +30 693 918 6245.
What is included and what is extra
Every quotation for a yacht charter in Greece lists what the charter fee covers, so there are no surprises. As a rule, the fee covers the use of the yacht for the agreed period, its standard equipment and the yacht's insurance. On skippered and crewed charters it also covers the skipper or crew wages.
Items that are usually charged separately include fuel, marina and harbour fees, the final cleaning, optional extras such as a paddleboard, a gennaker or an outboard for the tender, the skipper's or crew's food on board, and a security deposit or damage-waiver option on bareboat charters. On crewed motor yachts, running costs such as fuel, food and drinks are often paid through an advance provisioning allowance that is reconciled at the end of the trip. The exact list depends on the yacht, which is why we confirm it in writing before you book.
We do not publish fixed prices on these pages because rates depend on the yacht, the week of the season and the charter format. Ask for a quotation and you get the real price for your dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence for a yacht charter in Greece?
Only for bareboat charters. Skippered, crewed and cabin charters and day cruises require no licence.
Which region is best for a first yacht charter in Greece?
The Ionian and the Saronic Gulf, because distances are short and the winds are usually moderate.
How do I get a price?
Send us your dates, number of guests and preferred region. We reply with the yachts that are actually available and a written quotation.
How far in advance should I book a yacht charter in Greece?
For July and August it is best to start looking several months ahead, because the most popular yachts are booked early. Outside peak season there is usually more choice at shorter notice. Send us your dates and we will tell you what is actually available.
Can I have a skipper on a yacht charter in Greece?
Yes. Most yachts can be chartered with a professional skipper, and larger motor yachts and catamarans can come with a full crew. See skippered yacht charters and crewed yacht charters.
