Skippered yacht charter Greece: how it works
Contents
What the skipper does
The skipper is responsible for the yacht and the safety of everyone on board. They plan each day's route around the weather, handle mooring and anchoring, and know the local harbours, anchorages and tavernas. You can be as involved as you like: many guests learn to steer, trim sails and help with lines, while others simply relax.

Living on board with a skipper
The skipper usually sleeps on board in a cabin or a dedicated skipper's berth, so plan one cabin for them unless the yacht has separate quarters. Guests normally cover the skipper's food during the charter, either by sharing meals on board or by paying for meals ashore. The skipper's wage is part of the quotation.
Who should choose a skippered charter
A skippered yacht charter Greece trip is the best option if nobody in your group holds a sailing licence, if you are sailing in a windy area such as the Cyclades in July and August, or if you simply want to enjoy the trip without the responsibility. It is also a good way to learn: some skippers are happy to teach as you go.
Skippered vs crewed
A skippered charter has one professional on board. A crewed charter adds a host or chef and sometimes deckhands, so cooking and cleaning are taken care of. See skippered or crewed and crewed yacht charter Greece.
How booking works
Booking a skippered yacht charter in Greece with Astra Yachting follows the same steps every time. You send your preferred dates, the number of guests, the type of charter you want (bareboat, skippered or crewed) and any must-see stops. We check live availability with the yacht owners and charter fleets we work with, and come back with the yachts that are actually free for your dates, their exact specifications and a written quotation.
Once you choose a yacht, you receive the charter agreement and the payment schedule. The booking is confirmed when the agreement is signed and the first payment is received, as set out in our Booking Terms & Conditions. Before departure we collect the crew list required by the Greek port authorities, any sailing licences for bareboat charters, and your provisioning or transfer requests.
On embarkation day you meet the yacht in the charter base you choose, go through the check-in and safety briefing, and set off. During the charter you can reach us by phone or WhatsApp on +30 693 918 6245.
What is included and what is extra
Every quotation for a skippered yacht charter in Greece lists what the charter fee covers, so there are no surprises. As a rule, the fee covers the use of the yacht for the agreed period, its standard equipment and the yacht's insurance. On skippered and crewed charters it also covers the skipper or crew wages.
Items that are usually charged separately include fuel, marina and harbour fees, the final cleaning, optional extras such as a paddleboard, a gennaker or an outboard for the tender, the skipper's or crew's food on board, and a security deposit or damage-waiver option on bareboat charters. On crewed motor yachts, running costs such as fuel, food and drinks are often paid through an advance provisioning allowance that is reconciled at the end of the trip. The exact list depends on the yacht, which is why we confirm it in writing before you book.
We do not publish fixed prices on these pages because rates depend on the yacht, the week of the season and the charter format. Ask for a quotation and you get the real price for your dates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the skipper cook?
Not usually. A skipper sails the yacht; cooking is done by a host or chef on a crewed charter.
Can we choose the route?
Yes. Tell the skipper what you want to see, and they will plan a route that suits the weather and your group.
Do we tip the skipper?
Tipping is customary but optional, and at your discretion.
How far in advance should I book a skippered yacht charter in Greece?
For July and August it is best to start looking several months ahead, because the most popular yachts are booked early. Outside peak season there is usually more choice at shorter notice. Send us your dates and we will tell you what is actually available.
Can a skippered yacht come with a full crew?
Yes. Most yachts can be chartered with a professional skipper, and larger motor yachts and catamarans can come with a full crew. See skippered yacht charters and crewed yacht charters.
Do I need a sailing licence?
No. Your professional skipper will operate the yacht throughout the charter.
Can I help with sailing?
Absolutely. If you’re interested, your skipper will be happy to let you participate and even teach you some sailing basics during the trip.
Is a skippered charter suitable for families?
Yes. It is one of the safest and most relaxing ways for families to explore the Greek islands.
What is included in the charter price?
Your yacht, professional skipper, standard equipment, safety gear, and technical support are included. Fuel, marina fees, provisioning, and optional extras may be charged separately.
