Day charter or week-long charter
There are two ways to plan a yacht charter Mykonos trip. A private day cruise with a skipper is the most popular. A week-long charter uses Mykonos as a start or a stop on a Cyclades route, often combined with Paros, Naxos, Syros or Tinos.
Mykonos has an international airport with direct flights in summer and ferry links to Piraeus and Rafina, which makes it an easy place to join a yacht.
Delos and Rhenia
Delos, just west of Mykonos, was one of the most important religious centres in the ancient Greek world and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The archaeological site is visited using the scheduled boats from Mykonos town, and private yachts do not land guests there. Rhenia, the larger island directly behind Delos, is uninhabited and has sandy coves that are ideal for swimming and lunch at anchor.
The meltemi and Mykonos
Mykonos is known for wind. The meltemi blows from the north mainly in July and August and can be strong for several days. In a north wind the south coast is the sheltered side, and that is where most day cruises spend their time. Week-long routes are planned around the forecast; an experienced skipper is strongly recommended in midsummer. June and September usually bring lighter winds and quieter anchorages.
Where yachts are based
Day boats usually pick guests up in Ornos bay or at the new port at Tourlos, north of Mykonos town. Larger yachts can moor at the marina at Tourlos, subject to space, or anchor in a sheltered bay and use the tender.
