Boat rental Mykonos: how private day cruises work

How a private boat day works

Most boat rental Mykonos trips are private, skippered day cruises. The boat picks you up at an agreed point, usually Ornos bay on the south-west coast or the new port at Tourlos, and the skipper plans the route around the wind on the day. A typical trip lasts several hours and includes two or three swim stops, with time to snorkel, use the paddleboard if the boat carries one, and have lunch at anchor or at a beach taverna.

Boats range from fast RIBs, which are ideal for small groups who want to cover distance quickly, to motor yachts and catamarans with shade, a toilet and more space on deck.

Five stops on a typical day

Rhenia – the uninhabited island next to Delos, with sandy coves and very clear water. Delos – the UNESCO-listed sanctuary island; private boats cannot land guests there, so visitors use the scheduled boats from Mykonos town and private cruises usually anchor off Rhenia nearby. The south coast beaches – Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paradise, Super Paradise and Elia. Kalafatis and Agia Anna – on the south-east coast. Fokos or Agios Sostis – on the north coast, only on calm days.

Wind: why the route changes

Mykonos is one of the windiest islands in the Cyclades. In July and August the meltemi blows from the north, sometimes for several days. The south coast and Rhenia's southern bays are usually sheltered in a north wind, and that is where most trips go. The skipper may change the route or the timing for comfort and safety.

Do you need a licence?

No licence is needed for a skippered boat rental Mykonos trip. In Greece, a small boat with a low-powered outboard (up to 30 hp) can be rented without a licence; anything larger needs a licensed skipper. All the boats we offer for day cruises come with a skipper.

How booking works

Booking a boat rental in Mykonos with Astra Yachting follows the same steps every time. You send your preferred dates, the number of guests, the type of charter you want (bareboat, skippered or crewed) and any must-see stops. We check live availability with the yacht owners and charter fleets we work with, and come back with the yachts that are actually free for your dates, their exact specifications and a written quotation.

Once you choose a yacht, you receive the charter agreement and the payment schedule; our Booking Terms & Conditions and charter FAQs set out each step, from the crew list to embarkation day.

On embarkation day you meet the yacht in Mykonos (usually Ornos or the new port at Tourlos), go through the check-in and safety briefing, and set off. During the charter you can reach us by phone or WhatsApp on +30 693 918 6245.

What is included and what is extra

Every quotation for a boat rental in Mykonos lists what the charter fee covers, so there are no surprises. As a rule, the fee covers the use of the yacht for the agreed period, its standard equipment and the yacht's insurance. On skippered and crewed charters it also covers the skipper or crew wages.

Fuel, marina fees, the final cleaning, optional extras and the security deposit are usually charged separately. The FAQs explain each item, and your written quotation lists them for the yacht you choose.

We do not publish fixed prices on these pages because rates depend on the yacht, the week of the season and the charter format. Ask for a quotation and you get the real price for your dates.

Rates depend on the boat, the duration and the date. We confirm the exact boat, price and availability in writing after your enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Delos on a private boat?

Private boats cannot land guests on Delos. To walk around the archaeological site, take the official boats from Mykonos town. Many private cruises anchor nearby at Rhenia instead.

How many people can a rental boat take?

It depends on the boat. RIBs typically take up to around ten guests and larger yachts take more, within the limits on the vessel's licence. Each listing shows the maximum number of guests.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, towels, sun protection, a hat and any medication. Ask whether drinks, snacks or lunch are included in the quotation.

How far in advance should I book a boat rental in Mykonos?

For July and August it is best to start looking several months ahead, because the most popular yachts are booked early. Outside peak season there is usually more choice at shorter notice. Send us your dates and we will tell you what is actually available.

Can I have a skipper on a boat rental in Mykonos?

Yes. Most yachts can be chartered with a professional skipper, and larger motor yachts and catamarans can come with a full crew. See skippered yacht charters and crewed yacht charters.

Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Mykonos?

Not if you book with a skipper, which is how most Mykonos boat rentals work.

Is a sunset boat trip possible?

Yes. Sunset is one of the most requested times, so book early in high season.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Mykonos?

The cost depends on the boat, the length of the trip and the date, and July and August are the most expensive weeks. A RIB for a half day is usually the lowest-cost option; a motor yacht or catamaran for a full day with lunch on board costs more. Fuel, marina fees, the final cleaning and optional extras are usually charged separately, and we confirm the exact price in writing after your enquiry.
